Workshop taught at Beam Camp, Strafford, NH, Summer 2010
After a brief introduction to taiko drumming and some of its varying styles, students constructed portable practice taiko drums from buckets, tape, contact paper, and sand (for weight). Students experimented with different styles of constructing the drum head to ensure maximum durability and acoustic quality. Through practicing simple rhythms on their drums, they were able to learn the proper stance and timing for taiko drumming, as well as the Japanese syllabary system for counting drumbeats. Finally, students collaborated to write their own original piece of taiko music and performed it in front of the entire camp.
