Wind-Up Cars Workshop

Wind-Up Cars designed by EJ Park; Workshop co-taught by EJ and myself at Beam Camp, Strafford, NH, 2011

Example of a finished wind-up car (older students’ version).

Workshop Description

In this workshop, students created a fully mobile wind-up car from materials easily found in art supply and home improvement stores. Students not only constructed all external and internal mechanisms of the car (including gears, wheels, axles, and cams), but also learned to incorporate these mechanisms into a system of motion involving a coiled metal spring. During construction, students were able to build proficiency in the use of a wide variety of tools, including hand saws, table saws, drill presses, and belt sanders. This workshop was split into two groups according to age; older students created the car seen above, while 9 and 10 year old students created a smaller, simpler version without cams or the movable wings.
